Recommended Tools to Install the libRadtran C and Fortran Libraries under Windows 95/98/NT/2000 Last update: December 8, 2000 We recommend installing the following GNU tools before attempting to build the libRadtran C and Fortran libraries: * Cygnus Development Suite The Cygnus Development Suite is a port of GNU C compiler gcc and contains all tools necessary for the compilation of libRadtran, in particular `make' and a port of the UNIX `bash'. This package allows the compilation of libRadtran as on a UNIX system without any changes. Aside from being able to compile libRadtran, you will get one of the best compilers available to date for free. The Cygnus Develoment Suite is available from http://cygwin.com. Following is a short description of the essential steps for the installation of the GNU development suite. For more, and probably more recent information, please read the documentation provided with the Cygnus distribution. The installation process described below is of course subject to changes. For the impatient: ----------------- (1) Get the Cygnus Port of the GNU C compiler. It is available from http://cygwin.com. Follow the instructions on the Web page to download the latest distribution. At present, you would simply click on "Install Cygnus now" and start the "setup.exe" which is saved to your disk. Follow the further instructions and install at least the following components: bash, binutils, cygwin, flex, gawk, gcc, gzip, make, tar (2) If you want, you may test the compiler: create a file 'hello.c' with your favourite text editor (you may use for example the Notepad to do this, but for more professional use we recommend a better editor, e.g. GNU Emacs, which is available from http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/windows/ntemacs.html). ---------- hello.c, cut here ------------ #include main() { printf ("hello, world!\n"); } ---------- hello.c, cut here ------------ Start the Cygnus development suite by clicking on the Icon or starting "cygnus.bat" and compile test program: 'gcc -o hello hello.c'. If everything is installed correctly, the compiler will create an executable, 'hello.exe'. (3) Install libRadtran: Start the Cygnus development suite, unpack the libRadtran distribution ('gzip -d libRadtran-x.xx.tar.gz', 'tar -xvf libRadtran-x.xx.tar') where x.xx is the version of the current distribution and follow the instructions in the 'INSTALL' file in the libRadtran-x.xx directory. These are basically: execute './configure' and 'make'. For more information refer to the documentation provided with libRadtran.
